Understanding insulation quotes: why they differ

The short answer

Because contractors are often quoting different jobs. There are many insulation products and methods, and quotes vary with the material, thickness, R-value target, prep and removal work, and what cleanup and inspections are included. Compare those details, not just the total.

What changes the price

  • Material: open-cell foam, closed-cell foam, blown-in cellulose, fiberglass, or a combination.
  • Thickness and R-value: two inches of closed-cell and five inches is a very different job.
  • Air sealing: some quotes include sealing bypasses before insulating and some do not.
  • Prep and removal: taking out damaged, wet, or rodent-contaminated insulation adds labor and disposal.
  • Access: tight attics, finished spaces, and crawl spaces take more time.
  • Permits, inspections, and cleanup: included in some quotes, extra in others.

How to compare quotes apples-to-apples

  1. Ask what material and how many inches go in each area.
  2. Ask for the target R-value by area.
  3. Confirm whether air sealing is included and where.
  4. Ask whether old insulation is removed, and who disposes of it.
  5. Confirm permits, inspections, cleanup, and warranty terms.

A lower number that leaves out air sealing or uses less material is not a better deal. It is a different job.

How Seal Tech quotes

We give a written estimate that spells out the material, thickness, and areas covered, after looking at your actual house. If two areas of your home need different solutions, the estimate says so.

Seal Tech tip: If one quote is far lower than the others, check the thickness and whether air sealing is included.
