Why is my upstairs still hot in summer and cold in winter?

The short answer

Usually because the insulation is not doing its job or the air sealing was never done properly. The fastest way heat moves is through air, so leaky ductwork, gaps around outlets and light fixtures, and unsealed bath fans let attic air pour into your upstairs rooms.

What the crew says in the video

  • You might not have good insulation, and your air sealing might not have been done properly.
  • The fastest way for heat to transfer is through air.
  • Leaky ductwork, holes around outlets, and bathroom fans that are not sealed are common culprits.

What is really happening

Your attic gets very hot in summer and very cold in winter. Every gap between the attic and the rooms below lets that air move: around recessed lights, bath fan housings, plumbing vents, wiring holes, and the attic hatch. Ductwork running through the attic can leak too. Insulation that is thin, settled, or uneven makes it worse.

How to fix it

  1. Air seal the attic floor. Seal the bypasses before adding any insulation.
  2. Check the ducts. Leaky attic ductwork can dump conditioned air straight into the attic.
  3. Bring insulation up to depth across the whole attic, with no thin spots.
  4. Address knee walls and cathedral ceilings, common weak spots in Cape Cods and finished attics.

When spray foam makes sense

For cathedral ceilings, knee walls, and attics with ductwork or equipment, spray foam on the roofline can bring the whole attic inside the conditioned space. For a simple open attic, air sealing plus blown-in insulation is often the best value.

Seal Tech tip: Feel a draft at an upstairs outlet on a windy day? That is an air leak.
