Rebates and incentives for insulation upgrades

The short answer

Often, yes. Michigan utilities including DTE Energy, Consumers Energy and SEMCO Energy offer energy-efficiency rebates that can apply to qualifying insulation and air sealing work. The federal insulation tax credit (25C) has ended for work completed after December 31, 2025.

What the crew says in the video

  • Jack explains that incentives can come from DTE, Consumers Energy, and SEMCO, depending on where you live.
  • He says Seal Tech can walk you through the process so you get the rebates and incentive programs available to you.
Please note: Update: this video mentions federal tax credits. The federal Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit (25C) ended for improvements placed in service after December 31, 2025, so it no longer applies to new insulation projects. Utility rebates are still the main incentive to ask about.

Which rebates might apply

  • Your electric and gas utility. DTE Energy, Consumers Energy, and SEMCO Energy run home energy-efficiency programs. Which one applies depends on who provides your service.
  • Program requirements. Rebates usually require qualifying materials, minimum R-values, or work done by a participating contractor. Some require an assessment first.
  • Amounts change. Utility programs are updated every year, so the rebate available today may differ from what a neighbor received.

What happened to the federal tax credit?

From 2023 through 2025, homeowners could claim the federal Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit for qualifying insulation. That credit ended for improvements placed in service after December 31, 2025. If you completed insulation work in 2025, talk to your tax preparer about claiming it on your 2025 return. For new projects, focus on utility programs.
